A word of encouragement for your day.
SHOCKING!
"And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us."
Hebrews eleven is the most amazing and at the same time shocking presentation of the obedient, daring, self-sacrificing and suffering-filled faith of the Old Testament saints.
It ends with the explanation that they did not possess what we as New Testament believers have.
We have received “something better" than them: Jesus has achieved a perfect atonement through His sacrifice, which means that our basic sin nature has been wiped out and we have received the perfect, sinless life of the Spirit.
The Spirit of faith that enabled Jesus to overcome death has through the new birth also become our faith.
We need to read, pray and meditate on Hebrews eleven until we are shaken out of our comfortable
self-preserving faith, to rise up into walking not only in the heroic faith of the Old Testament witnesses, but into the faith of Jesus Himself, “the Originator and Perfecter of faith.”
He is the Source of the faith of the Old Testament saints and the one who by His Spirit imparts His own perfect faith into us New Testament believers.
That faith carries us through all the storms of life and the trials and sufferings necessary to bring forth a firm character, so that we may in practice live the perfect and holy life of the Spirit which has been imparted to us.
The whole message of Hebrews is that we are partakers of a better covenant, containing infinitely greater assets than our Old Testament comrades.
This should cause us to live on a much higher level of faith than they ever could.
