Our spiritual life is like gold, it must be washed out, separated from everything else: ‘all that glitters is not gold’ (there is such a thing as ‘cat gold’ – false gold!).

This precious treasure must be carefully guarded and protected.

Many want to destroy it!

Jesus shows in Matthew 13 that very few come to full maturity and fruitfulness in their spiritual life.

It is an incredible battle—all hell is rising against it—for the devil knows that a Spirit-filled person is his superior, just like Jesus!

Note! To become spiritual in the biblical sense is not to become strange, ‘to float in the blue.’

On the contrary, to be spiritual is to be completely natural and human, a person with his feet on earth - but with his heart in heaven.

It is a harmonious union between the spiritual and the natural, the divine and the human, the heavenly and the earthly, just as in the Man, Jesus Christ.

Spirituality is neither synonymous with religiosity. Religiosity is the natural man's attempt to live the

spiritual life. That is fruitless. We can never ever with all our efforts produce so much as a drop of spirituality.

The spiritual life flows into us through the Holy Spirit only in a living, personal relationship with Jesus Christ. John confirms that the ultimate purpose of Jesus becoming man, of His death, resurrection and glorification, was the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

To be spiritual is to have a sound, balanced mind, Paul writes in 2 Timothy1:7. It implies becoming

completely oneself and being able to live in the present as a genuine, natural person, who never has to pretend or play a role that is not his/her own.

The more spiritual we become, the more genuine and down-to-earth we become: "in the world, but not of the world" as Jesus said.

It is thus not a behaviour that one settles down with, nor an escape from reality - but a God-given ability to deal with reality as it is in a spiritual-natural way: living the heavenly life in the earthly reality.

That requires a profound work of the Spirit of God in us.

Therefore, it takes time to find that balance and become a truly spiritual person!
