FREE FROM THE ANXIETY OF DEATH
"Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives."
In the depths of the heart of fallen man there is a totally bottomless anxiety, the keynote of his heart: a life/death anxiety which is the terrible reality of hell and is described with the words: "there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth" - i.e. total despair.
This anxiety can lie deeply buried under external, human security through a safe childhood, good circumstances, or under multitudes of defence mechanisms, control of life's circumstances in the form of safety devices, thought structures, etc. - but it can emerge in unexpected and pressured situations in the seemingly securest person.
What is this anxiety of death?
It is the devil's death-spirit grip on the innermost being of man, his choking grip on our lives that manifests itself in our own desperate control of our life situation.
We are not deeply converted until we have repented of this grip on our own lives and not deeply saved until we have been freed from this grip of death, and the Spirit of the Lord, the "Spirit of adoption", has taken full hold of our inner man and our outer life.
We must therefore allow God’s Spirit to penetrate the depths of our inner selves and completely set us free from the harrowing anguish of the fear of death. This is the completion of the Divine love invasion in us: a complete eradication of this deadly spirit-grip on us and thus of all fear.
Boldness "on the day of judgment" means that our lives are in full harmony with God in everything: the Spirit of God has invaded and formed the Beloved Son in us so that He has become our life and we are "as He is in this world" (1 Jn.4:16-18).
Perfect love sets us completely free from the anxiety of death!
