THE WHITE STONE
"So that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. To the one who overcomes, I will give a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows except the one who receives it."
What does it mean to receive “a white stone”?
A white stone was used in Roman courts and meant: not guilty.
In a biblical context, it means to have been declared righteous by God.
It is the same meaning as “the requirement of the law” being fulfilled.
And what is this requirement?
That we “walk according to the Spirit” – that is, that our entire life is characterized by the Spirit, so that we are driven and led by the Spirit of God in everything we are and do.
This means that the only life that God approves is the life of the Spirit.
Why is this so?
That is the life for which man was originally created.
God is Spirit and man was created to be like Him: a spiritual person.
Christ is the man who fulfilled that requirement 100% – the only man God has approved and will ever approve of.
Therefore, we must go through the process of justification, which involves dying out to all that we are in ourselves and rising to the life of Christ.
Then we receive the white stone with the new name.
So what is the “new name” engraved on it?
A name in the biblical sense is a description of a person, a definition of his identity.
The new name, then, describes our new identity as Christ-persons.
Its meaning is that Christ himself has become our fundamental reality and identity.
Thus, we are approved by God, the Judge of the universe.
Why does no one know that name “except the one who receives it”?
It is your deep, personal secret with Christ!
He knows you and you know Him in a way that no one else does or can do.
Have you received the “white stone” with the ”new name”?
