Jesus teaches us something very important here about spiritual perception.

He speaks of a "clear eye" as opposed to a "bad eye".

The result for the whole of life ("your body") is either "light" or "darkness".

These words are in the middle of the exhortation not to set your heart on perishable earthly treasures but on eternal and indestructible heavenly ones, and the danger of a divided focus.

It is not possible to serve and love both God, the invisible Reality, and wealth (mammon), the material and visible.

What is He trying to teach us?

The word "clear" means simple and undivided, i.e. an eye with an undivided focus.

On what?

God!

It means seeing everything in God's light and valuing things, people, and events as He does.

What are the consequences of that?

If we love God with all our heart, soul, and strength, we will never be dominated and controlled by material things, so that our physical needs become our great concern. They will never have the first place in our lives, but we will seek first of all the kingdom of God and use all our resources and all our strength in its service, not primarily for ourselves.

We realize that all we are and all we have belongs to our Creator and is intended to fulfil His eternal purposes, not our own temporary and short-term desires.

Then we will become carefree and happy people who live in God's light and know what the purpose of our lives is.

A "bad" eye is an eye that is "evil", influenced by the Evil One, because it is set in the wrong direction: the earthly, the material.

If we love the material, we become slaves of the visible, people who do not know where they are going, deceived and blinded by the prince of darkness.

Make sure that the eye of your heart is always set in the right direction!
